Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) says that German cable MSO Kabel Deutschland (KD) will deploy Cisco CRS-3 Routers as part of an upgrade of KD’s core network.

Kabel Deutschland serves about 8.7 million customers via cable networks in 13 German federal states. A desire to expand the capabilities of its current services and lay the foundation for faster broadband speeds has led KD to launch the backbone upgrade, Cisco says. For example, KD already offers 100-Mbps Internet services; the new core routers, particularly when deployed with 100-Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, will enable future 1-Gbps offerings.

"The Cisco CRS-3 Platform enables Kabel Deutschland to scale its network in order to support the increasing bandwidth demand that a growing customer base and successful 100 mbps products require,” said Lorenz Glatz, chief technical officer at Kabel Deutschland. “With the CRS-3 Platform, Kabel Deutschland has made the first step to upgrade its national network towards 100-Gbps connections."

"The CRS-3 complements Cisco's ASR 9000 Series which KD recently deployed, positioning KD to deliver a multitude of video and data services and manage the demands of visual networking," added Surya Panditi, senior vice president and general manager, core technology group, Cisco.
