Vecima Networks Inc. (TSX:VCM) that it will begin a design program aimed at the development of what it called “a next-generation, extremely high density broadband cable transmitter” for a major cable broadband access company it declined to further identify. Vecima will collaborate on the design with a chip manufacturer the company also would not identify.
Vecima and its partner will implement the technology as an IC that will be incorporated in the cable broadband access company's future flagship platform for data over cable and digital video.
The density of the resulting IC will better the current alternative by a factor of 40 and reduce power consumption by a factor of 20, Vecima asserts. The company won the design slot “in the presence of stiff competition,” it adds.
"Vecima is very pleased to have won this contract as it represents the evolution of this highly specialized technology in which Vecima has been the world leader from the early days of cable broadband," said Dr. Surinder Kumar, chairman and CEO of Vecima. "This design win is part of our strategy to build a pipeline of future revenue."
