APRIL 2, 2008 -- PGT Photonics (search for PGT Photonics), a new company within the Pirelli Group (search for Pirelli) that specializes in second-generation photonics and transport systems for metro and access networks, today announced a new release of its City+ CWDM & DWDM Multiservice Platform. The company claims release 1.4 brings additional functionalities and greater transport flexibility in metro networks.

With the explosive growth of bandwidth-intensive services, metro access and metro core networks have become the most critical areas. Pirelli says its scalable City+ CWDM & DWDM Platform, based on pluggable optics, offers the versatility to accommodate all types of datacom and telecom interfaces, including SDH/Sonet, Gigabit Ethernet, 10-Gigabit Ethernet, FC, ESCON, and FICON, allowing telecom operators to deliver premium services through the optimization of existing infrastructures and the development of next-generation networks.

"The market is asking for a cost-effective metro solution to address both legacy equipment and carrier-grade Ethernet transport," explains Pierluigi Franco, senior vice president, sales and marketing--systems for PGT Photonics. "With City+ Release 1.4, we are responding with a platform that allows service providers to exploit their existing and new network infrastructures, including SDH/SONET and Ethernet, with WDM capacity. With this new release," Franco adds, "we are also facilitating the migration from legacy to next-generation networks."

According to PGT Photonics representatives, the enhanced City+ system now supports a wider range of interfaces and provides optimized features for signal grooming and transport, including full support of OC-192/STM-64 clients and a new board handling multiple STM-1/4 (OC-3/12). The new release of the platform is now commercially available.

City+ CWDM & DWDM Multiservice Platform is Pirelli's carrier-class subsystem, which builds on the success of its existing City8 CWDM platform by adding DWDM capabilities able to scale up to a total capacity of 175 Gbits/sec on a single platform.
