JULY 24, 2008 -- Avvio Networks (search for Avvio) demonstrated its new element management system (EMS) software at NXTComm in Las Vegas last month. The GUI-based EMS software allows network managers to remotely monitor and reconfigure network elements from their NOC. The EMS interoperates with HP Openview and works on a number of popular platforms like Windows, Linux, and Solaris, according to Avvio.
The EMS software is designed to enable monitoring of MIB objects, events, and alarms. It allows users to drill down from a network view to chassis, module, and component views, Avvio adds. Alarms are color coded as critical, major, and minor for immediate detection. Alarm and event histories are available at the network, chassis, and module levels. This data can be an invaluable historical record of network operation.
The EMS software can also be used to reconfigure network elements. The AM4025E Edge ROADM provides an example of remote reconfiguration. The AM4025E is designed to be able to add and drop up to eight contiguous channels at any given time. If an AM4025 is currently configured to drop ITU channels 17, 18, and 19, and another channel is required at that site, the network administrator can remotely add ITU channel 20 from the NOC using the EMS, all without disrupting network operation Avvio says.
The password protected EMS software allows for strict user management. Two types of user can be added or deleted, "Superusers" and standard users. Superusers can configure network elements while standard users have read-only capability.
