Nokia Siemens Networks launches single optical platform serving metro to core
JUNE 23, 2008 -- Nokia Siemens Networks (search for Nokia Siemens Networks) today introduced what it claims is the industry's first DWDM single platform serving metro to core. The new release of the hiT 7300 combines the company's core network performance with extended support for metro services.
Â
Competitive DWDM platforms on the market currently require at least two DWDM systems to cover the spectrum of reaches, transmission speed, and applications in metro, regional, long-haul and ultra-long haul, say company representatives. Nokia Siemens Networks says its hiT 7300 supports all reaches and transmission speeds at pay-as-you-grow economics that meet market price levels at each category of application segment (i.e. metro, regional, long haul and ultra-long haul) on one platform.
Â
"A single solution is the best way to help carriers respond to CAPEX and OPEX pressure," explains Bernd Schumacher, head of IP transport at Nokia Siemens Networks. "Having one platform for all reaches and applications reduces the cost for spares, operation and maintenance, training and network management, space, and power consumption," he says.
Â
The new release of hiT 7300 comes with a rich multi-service and multi-reach feature set. Transponder cards support traditional SONET/SDH, Ethernet, and Storage Area Network (SAN) services at different speeds. The client interfaces offer a maximum of flexibility as the service type is software configurable, the company claims. To further reduce space and power, the latest release of hiT 7300 is also available in a flatpack form factor suitable as customer premise equipment (CPE) for tight space requirements. hiT 7300 allows the customer to decide to use CWDM, DWDM, or a mix both on the same fiber. Complemented with cost-efficient amplifier options and end-to-end management support for all equipment configurations, hiT 7300 breaks down the barriers between classical core and metro DWDM equipment, contend Nokia Siemens representatives.
Â
hiT 7300 supports all possible network topologies: Point-to-point, rings structures, and meshed networks. As a supplier of reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (ROADMs) and 40G transport systems, Nokia Siemens Networks claims to have the broadest portfolio for photonic networking. This ranges from cost-efficient and flexible O optical add/drop multiplexers (OADMs) to ROADMs to multi-degree Photonic-Cross-Connects (PXC) supporting 80 channels, allowing carriers to cost-efficiently route traffic on the optical layer remotely, saving truck rolls and site visits. ROADMs and PXC give carriers the opportunity to quickly and flexibly react to varying traffic demands, notes the company.
Â
hiT 7300--a scalable and fully automated DWDM platform--comes with the planning and configuration tool TransNet, which makes the deployment as simple as plug-and-play, Nokia Siemens representatives add.
