Infinera: We have Paris-Lyon covered

Infinera (NASDAQ:INFN) says that multiple carriers, including pan-European carrier Interoute and French fiber-optic network service provider Covage, are using its Digital Optical Networks platforms to transmit more than 2 Tbps of traffic between Paris and Lyon, France.

The 450 km between Paris and Lyon is a particularly busy section of Europe’s communications highway, Infinera says. The route carries traffic between Northern and Southern Europe, Western Europe and Eastern Europe, and from North America via landing stations on the English Channel. Communications from Africa and the Middle East also travel the same path.

Meanwhile, Infinera says Internet exchanges in Europe indicate that Internet traffic in Europe continues to grow at double-digit rates, which should drive requirements for even more bandwidth between the two French cities. The systems company has unveiled plans to increase the capacity of its systems to 25 Tbps through improved photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and its FlexCoherent and FlexChannel technologies (see “Infinera details terabit networking strategy”).

Quotes Infinera provided from Interoute and Covage indicate these carriers will welcome the bandwidth increase. "Our Infinera network is critical in helping us deliver services to customers when and where they need it very quickly and responsively. The Paris-Lyon route is one of many where we offer very large capacity and so are positioned to meet customer requests very quickly," said Matthew Finnie, Interoute's CTO.

"Our Infinera network has helped us launch a successful business in France, carrying large volumes of corporate and Internet traffic, and also helped us deliver services to broadband customers," said Vincent Couarraze, director of Covage Networks.
