Regional development consortium Sociedad Promotora de Telecomunicaciones de Extremadura (SPTE) has selected Alcatel-Lucent to design, deploy, and integrate an end-to-end, fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network in Western Spain’s Extremadura region. TeleCable, Extremadura Avante, Caja de Extremadura, and Caja Badajoz are major shareholders of SPTE.

The first phase will enable the delivery of ultra-high-speed Internet services with bandwidths up to 100 Mbps, multimedia and digital TV, and voice and other communications services to up to 134,000 households in the four most populated municipalities of Extremadura (Badajoz, Cáceres, Mérida, and Plasencia). Extremadura’s inhabitants will also have access to advanced multimedia services over Alcatel-Lucent’s MiViewTV interactive television platform.

The initial phase of the project is expected to cost $86 million Euro. The deployment will be closely coordinated with regional and local governments based on efficiency and sustainability criteria, and leverage urban and long-distance infrastructure and available ducts.

Alcatel-Lucent will also leverage its expertise in gigabit passive optical networking (GPON), IP/MPLS aggregation, and packet optical and WDM transport.

“Alcatel-Lucent’s end-to-end solution will enable us to deploy one of Europe’s most advanced broadband networks and the biggest amongst regional fiber networks in Spain, which will soon become the engine driving the social and economic development of the entire region,” says Ismael Oliver, president, SPTE.
