Oni Communications taps Alcatel-Lucent for 100-Gbps network between Portugal and Spain

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) and Portuguese communications operator Oni Communications have the creation of a 100-Gbps fiber-optic network link between Lisbon, Portugal and Badajoz, Spain.

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) and Portuguese communications operator Oni Communications have announced the creation of a 100-Gbps fiber-optic network link between Lisbon, Portugal and Badajoz, Spain. The high-speed route will support the bandwidth requirements of video streaming and multimedia content distribution, social networking, cloud services, e-commerce, and business services.

The link takes advantage of Alcatel-Lucent’s 1626 Light Manager enhanced with 100-Gbps coherent technology through the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS).

Ilídio Cardoso, board member at Oni Communications said, “Making the most of our existing fiber-optic networks is extremely important for us today, as it allows us to address exploding traffic growth.
