Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ: CIEN) says Russian carrier GlobalNet has selected its 4200 Advanced Services Platform for the upgrade of GlobalNet’s metro optical network. The new network will leverage the WaveLogic coherent optical processors in the 4200 to support 40-Gbps transmission rates.

A longstanding Ciena customer, GlobalNet offers connectivity services to enterprises in high-bandwidth sectors, including content delivery, media, and storage. Based in St. Petersburg, the operator serves West Russia with a privately owned optical network of more than 7,000 km. Its long-haul coherent 40-Gbps network is based on Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Platform, which also uses Ciena’s WaveLogic coherent optical processors. These features are now being extended to the metro network using Ciena’s 4200 platform.

GlobalNet will upgrade its metro network to support a total capacity of 1 Tbps. Ciena asserts that its technology will allow GlobalNet to protect past investments as well as increase its transmission rate by 4X.

“With the advent of media-rich content and cloud-based services, there is a growing demand for available bandwidth from companies in the St. Petersburg area, which is only going to increase in years to come. This represents a great opportunity for GlobalNet – and with the flexible and scalable network infrastructure enabled by Ciena, we can continue supporting our customers as their communications services needs evolve, while maintaining economical network operations,” said Valery Ostapenko, general director at GlobalNet.
