Titan Photonics touts technology for 100-Gigabit Ethernet on HFC networks

Titan Photonics, which supplies optical components and network subsystems to the cable/MSO market, says its new SR Technology will enable hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) networks to support 100-Gigabit Ethernet.

Titan says its SR Technology leverages “frequency-division Ethernet multiplexing” (FDEM), which is based on RF mixed-signal technology and delivered via a low-cost system on a chip (SoC). The technology supports 100 Gbps or more on a single wavelength. Cable operators using SR Technology and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) modems, can add bandwidth incrementally, Titan asserts, without requiring new wavelengths or fibers for backward compatibility.

The technology supports optical transport over medium to long distances, Titan asserts. However, since FDEM is RF based, service providers also can deploy it as an Ethernet over Copper (EoC) aid, Titan says. In fact, cable MSOs and other service providers can use FDEM with PON, point-to-point, and coaxial distribution networks, the company says.

Titan says it has planned FDEM demonstrations and is positioning the technology as an alternative to EPON.
