Riverstone and Sycamore demonstrate interoperability between intelligent optical networking platforms and metro routing device

Feb. 7, 2001
Riverstone Networks, a provider of service creation infrastructure, announced successful system interoperability results between Sycamore Network's award-winning SN 8000 transport platform with EtherOptic interfaces, the SN 16000 intelligent optical switch, and the Riverstone RS 8000 metropolitan area router.

Riverstone Networks, a provider of service creation infrastructure, announced successful system interoperability results between Sycamore Network's award-winning SN 8000 transport platform with EtherOptic interfaces, the SN 16000 intelligent optical switch, and the Riverstone RS 8000 metropolitan area router. Interoperable IP devices and optical networking service platforms will enable service providers to manage and scale their networks appropriately to meet their customers' high-bandwidth and service needs.

The companies tested interoperability between Riverstone's RS 8000 metropolitan router and Sycamore's SN 8000 transport platform with EtherOptic interfaces, as well as between the RS 8000 and the SN 16000 intelligent optical switch. Test results successfully demonstrated end-to-end error free transmission of IP packets over Gigabit Ethernet and Packet Over SONET OC-12 circuits.

"As service providers look to advance and extend their service offerings, interoperability between intelligent optical networking platforms and IP routers is essential to their networks," said Scott Clavenna, president of PointEast Research. "These interoperability results show how devices can co-exist in a hybrid network environment, thereby offering service providers the opportunity to accelerate the service delivery and revenue-generating capabilities."

"Interoperability between Riverstone's routers and Sycamore's intelligent optical transport and switching platforms will help meet the high-capacity demands of carriers and large service providers. Riverstone's switch routers are engineered to take the massive bandwidth and Lambda services made available by these next-generation optical switches and convert them into IP services," said Romulus Pereira, President and CEO of Riverstone Networks.
