Harmonic introduces digital DWDM transport solution

May 16, 2001
May 16, 2001--Harmonic Inc. announced the GIGALight, a cost-effective DWDM solution for transporting multiple Gigabit Ethernet, SONET and/or ATM data streams over a single fiber.

Harmonic Inc. (Nasdaq:HLIT) announced the GIGALight, a cost-effective DWDM solution for transporting multiple Gigabit Ethernet, SONET and/or ATM data streams over a single fiber. GIGALight rounds out Harmonic's Ethernet transport solutions for the access network, while extending Harmonic's DWDM expertise to the metro market. GIGALight is optimized to support a variety of digital transport applications, including video-on-demand (VOD), high-speed data, and IP telephony.

GIGALight complements Harmonic's existing optical and digital video solutions, including the METROLink DWDM platform, Narrowcast Services Gateway (NSG), and Ethernet switching plug-in modules for the PWRBlazer node family.

GIGALight is a modular family of products that includes transmitters, receivers and transceivers. GIGALight transports digital traffic, including Gigabit Ethernet, ATM and SONET/SDH, over up to 32 different wavelengths. Using DWDM, high-speed digital traffic can be carried on a single fiber and targeted by wavelength. Signals can be multiplexed and transported over distances of up to 200 km. GIGALight will be available in the second half of this year.
