Altrio selects Harmonic for broadband infrastructure build

June 20, 2001
June 20, 2001--Harmonic Inc. announced that Altrio Communications, Inc. has selected a range of Harmonic's optical solutions for the build of Altrio's new Southern California residential integrated communications system.

Harmonic Inc. (Nasdaq:HLIT) announced that Altrio Communications, Inc. has selected a range of Harmonic's optical solutions -- including the METROLink DWDM, PWRBlazer Scaleable Nodes, digital DWDM return, and NETWatch network management -- for the build of Altrio's new Southern California residential integrated communications system. Altrio plans a network that will serve close to 600,000 subscribers over the course of the next several years, and is designed to support a broad spectrum of advanced digital video, high-speed data, and telephony services. Harmonic's optical solution set will also enable Altrio to incrementally extend fiber deeper into their network over time, as bandwidth demand justifies the cost associated with bringing fiber closer to subscriber businesses and homes.

Harmonic's METROLink DWDM platform is designed to maximize the capacity of HFC networks. The METROLink solution enables operators to centralize their transmission equipment in their network headends, thereby eliminating the need for multiple hubs.

Harmonic's PWRBlazer Scaleable node provides operators the flexibility to scale their networks to support increasing demand for bandwidth. The PWRBlazer Scaleable node is engineered to support a range of network architectures, including traditional HFC, deep-fiber, fiber to the curb, business and home. For return path traffic, the PWRBlazer Scaleable Node provides operators a range of options, including digital DWDM selected by Altrio.

Altrio is also tapping Harmonic's NETWatch network management solution. NETWatch enables Altrio to control and monitor Harmonic optical equipment. In addition, its standards-based interface can be easily integrated into a higher-level SNMP-based system-wide manager. Recent enhancements to the platform provide network management capability over IP networks; operators can control and monitor their networks from a standard web browser.
