Corning optical fiber selected for long-distance network build in India

Feb. 26, 2003
February 26, 2003--Optical fiber supplier Corning Inc. today announced that Tata Teleservices Ltd. (TTL), a leading telecommunications carrier in India, and Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (VSNL), India's largest international telephony service provider, will jointly deploy Corning optical fiber along a major portion of their high-speed national, long-distance network.

Optical fiber supplier Corning Inc. today announced that Tata Teleservices Ltd. (TTL), a leading telecommunications carrier in India, and Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (VSNL), India's largest international telephony service provider, will jointly deploy Corning optical fiber along a major portion of their high-speed national, long-distance network. The fiber-optic cable will contain up to 20,000 km of Corning's LEAF fiber and 100,000 km of Corning SMF-28 fiber.

"TTL and VSNL's investment in this nationwide, long-distance network will enhance the position of both companies in national and international fixed line telephony, WLL mobile telephony, and broadband data services," asserts Ajay Madan, chief technology officer for TTL. "Selecting Corning as our technology partner was an important step and will help us to ensure that our network is built to be efficient today, and at the same time, ready for the demands of the future."

Corning's non-zero dispersion-shifted fiber (NZ-DSF) LEAF fiber has balanced effective area with dispersion to mitigate the harmful effects of non-linearity, which degrade system performance in high bit-rate DWDM solutions. G.655.B-compliant, LEAF fiber is optimized for amplified DWDM 1550-nm transmission. It reduces complexity by reducing regeneration requirements, offers an upgrade path from 10 Gbits/sec to 40 Gbits/sec and provides a bridge from current long-haul networks into the metro, claim company representatives.

SMF-28 fiber offers high performance in 1310- and 1550-nm applications and is the world's most widely deployed optical fiber, says Corning.
