gst Telecommunications (Vancouver, WA), a facilities-based competitive local exchange carrier operating in the western United States, will buy dwdm systems from ciena Corp. (Linthicum, MD). The carrier will install the MultiWave 1600 system along with ciena`s optical add/drop multiplexers for long-haul use in California. The 500-mi network, now under construction, will run from San Francisco to Los Angeles. gst Telecommunications initially will run eight wavelengths of OC-48 (2.5 Gbits/sec) through the network, with the option of expanding its capacity to 16 wavelengths. The value of the contract was not disclosed.
