CIENA Corp. (Linthicum, MD) announced it will supply Enron Communications Inc. (Portland, OR) with CIENA`s Multiwave Sentry 4000 DWDM equipment for deployment on Enron`s new Pure Internet Protocol backbone network. Enron claims to be the first to create an architecture based on IP-to-the-glass via DWDM on a network-wide basis, eliminating the need for SONET, ATM, and frame relay components. CIENA began immediate shipments of equipment, valued at $23 million, for Enron`s Portland-to-Los Angeles fiber route. In its present configuration, Enron`s Pure IP network will transport data at speeds of OC-48 (2.5 Gbits/sec) on each DWDM channel.
