May 23, 2005 Paris, France -- Alcatel and Russian national long-distance operator Rostelecom have signed a contract to modernize the operator's optical fiber network in the south of the Russian federation. The operator says implementing the project will allow it to increase the capacity and efficiency of its existing network in order to deliver triple play broadband services to one of the most developed and expanding regions in the Russian federation.
Under the terms of the contract, Alcatel will deploy its 1626 Light Manager, 1678 Metro Core Connect (MCC), and Optical Multi-Service Node (OMSNs) systems. The company's1350 management suite currently monitors the operator's backbone network, and will be used to manage the upgraded network.
"We have been successfully partnering with Alcatel for several years and this contract will mark a new phase in our cooperation," comments Dmitry Yerokhin, CEO of Rostelecom.
"This award confirms our reliability as Rostelecom's partner of choice to enable the future-proof evolution of its optical transport infrastructure," adds Romano Valussi, President of Alcatel's optical networks activities.
The project is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter 2005.
