April 22, 2005 Sunnyvale, CA -- Charter Communications, a broadband services provider, has deployed Harmonic's CWDM platform to deliver high-speed network services to business, government, and education customers in Southern California. Harmonic's FLXLink commercial services platform provides Internet, VPN, and other managed services with access speeds up to 1-Gbit/sec.
The services complement the provider's existing cable modem offering, which provides Internet access to businesses and schools, as well as residences, in the Los Angeles area. Initial deployments of the company's FLXLink 100-Mbit/sec and 1-Gbit/sec CWDM transport systems will deliver secure Ethernet and IP services to enterprises, government facilities, and educational institutions. With bandwidth sufficient to support data, voice, and video capabilities, the provider expects the services to enable interactive applications such as video-based distance learning and remote medical consultation.
"Our networks directly pass, or are within a nominal distance of, thousands of prospective commercial customers," notes Scott Hansen, vice president of Charter's commercial services western division. "Harmonic's exceptional understanding of access networks, and of how to utilize existing infrastructure to deliver new services, makes it possible for Charter to turn those prospective customers into a new source of revenue."
"Harmonic has worked in close partnership with Charter to design and build the head-end and network infrastructure for these groundbreaking services," concludes Patrick Harshman, president of Harmonic's broadband access networks division.
