Packet-optical transport system and software developer ECI Telecom has taken the wraps off the first three applications within its LightApps suite. The applications are designed to enhance the performance and flexibility of conventional networks as well as those built on software-defined networking (SDN) principals.

The three applications are immediately available. They include:

  • LightConnect, a bandwidth-on-demand application that supports rapid service activation under the control of either external applications or the carrier's OSS.
  • LightTime, a service scheduler that enables service providers to reserve network resources in advance of service deployment.
  • LightInsight, a network analytics application that covers network inventory, service level agreements, and health.

ECI says it also has another pair of applications in the pipeline for release later this year. They include LightAction, for network programming to create automated responses to network events, and LightWays, which will address traffic congestion management.

Use of the LightApps software, particularly in combination, can significantly reduce service deployment time, improve network resource use by as much as 60%, and shrink time spent on routine tasks by up to 20%, asserts Gali Malkiel, head of ECI's Software and SDN Applications Line of Business
