Windstream Wholesale accelerates Southeast 400G network capacity

April 15, 2025
The new routes, which will leverage Ciena systems, enable the provider to address current and upcoming 800G needs as they arise.

Windstream Wholesale is once again enhancing network capabilities. Leveraging Ciena’s platforms, the wholesale operator is overbuilding network capabilities between Houston, Texas, and Tallahassee, Fla.

The new network upgrade offers increased capacity, enhanced service capabilities, and improved network efficiency. It also enables Windstream Wholesale to provide customers with 400G services over diverse routes today and future 800G services along this unique Gulf route.

Interest in this route is ripe. The service provider said it is already taking service orders for this network expansion, which is designed to meet the surging demand for high-speed, reliable connectivity.

By enabling 400G service, this project not only offers diverse routes between Texas and the Southeast but also offers Windstream Wholesale to support a growing customer base with various connectivity options to accommodate the demands of AI-driven innovations across the region.

This project allows Windstream Wholesale to accommodate diverse customer needs better and strengthen service resilience. Also, integrating in-line Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) monitoring capabilities in Ciena’s Reconfigurable Line System (RLS) allows for quicker resolution of network issues, reducing downtime and improving Windstream Wholesale's commitment to service quality.

Another potential benefit of the new route is network efficiency and reduced costs. The network upgrade will require regeneration points (regens) along the route. Windstream Wholesale said these new efficiencies will create a better cost structure and competitive service rates.

In addition, Ciena’s RLS allows Windstream Wholesale to provision express locations remotely, integrating multiple ROADM segments, which reduces provisioning time and minimizes truck rolls.

“Our collaboration with Ciena seamlessly complements our existing FLX/RLS network – including the Beach Route, our Florida-to-Atlanta buildout, and ongoing Texas projects – ensuring that we continue to provide reliable, advanced networking solutions,” said Joe Scattareggia, president of Windstream Wholesale. “This optimizes today’s network performance and positions us to provide for growing demand with innovative solutions.”
