Building Broadband: altafiber accelerates Dublin, Ohio fiber build; Blue Stream Fiber and Cape Coral establish public-private broadband partnership
altafiber, Blue Stream, Comcast, Fidium, Intrepid, Metronet, Ripple, TDS and WOW! are all expanding broadband in various communities through a mix of venture capital and state funding sources.
altafiber accelerates Dublin, Ohio fiber build
The City of Dublin and altafiber, which previously entered into a public-private partnership, announced that the majority of single-family home addresses will have access to the service provider’s multi-gig XGS-PON fiber network by the end of 2025. Once this phase of the project is complete, over 15,000 single-family home addresses in the City of Dublin will have access to altafiber’s fiber broadband service. altafiber will also continue to expand fiber access to multi-dwelling units (apartments, condominiums, townhouses) and business addresses. In 2023, the City of Dublin announced its partnership with altafiber to provide residents with improved access to higher internet speeds. Initially, the fiber build to single-family homes was expected to be complete in the Summer of 2026; however, the city and altafiber said the collaboration has accelerated the build-out timeline.
Blue Stream Fiber and Cape Coral establish public-private broadband partnership
Blue Stream Fiber has formed a partnership with Sandoval in Cape Coral, FL, to provide fiber broadband to over 1,425 residents. Sandoval, a premier 1,425-home master-planned and gated community in Cape Coral, Florida, spans approximately 524 acres of beautifully maintained grounds, scenic lakes, and nature preserves. The community offers a Caribbean-inspired lifestyle, featuring diverse housing options that include condos, villas, and single-family homes. In addition to providing telecom services, Blue Stream Fiber's partnership with Sandoval is also expected to increase property values within the community. According to recent studies, communities with access to fiber-optic technology can see a significant increase in their property values. Blue Stream Fiber has already initiated the fiber construction process to prepare for the activation of its services throughout the community in April 2026.
Comcast connects first homes and businesses in Leonardtown, MD area to broadband
Comcast has connected the first residents in Leonardtown, MD, to Xfinity and Comcast Business services. These are the first of 5,800 homes and businesses that Comcast is connecting to symmetrical Internet in the Leonardtown area. This expansion in Leonardtown deepens Comcast’s investment in St. Mary’s County, MD, where the company is undertaking a broader network expansion, ultimately connecting more than 30,000 residents and businesses across the county to Xfinity and Comcast Business services for the first time. The company expects to reach a milestone of connecting 50 percent of residents and businesses included in the expansion project by summer 2025, and to complete the entire project by 2028.
Fidium to bring multi-gigabit internet to over 30 additional Maine communities this year
Fidium has big plans for Maine this year. The service provider plans to reach over 30 new communities this year. The service provider will deliver new fiber broadband access to more than 100,000 additional homes and businesses in Maine by year's end, expanding its total reach to over 400,000 homes and businesses in the state.
Intrepid brings fiber broadband to Louisville, Colorado
Intrepid Fiber Networks hosted a groundbreaking event in Louisville, Colorado, commemorating the continued construction of its open-access fiber broadband network. This initiative aims to deliver symmetrical, multi-gigabit internet speeds to residents and businesses. Construction is already underway, with service currently available in select areas, and the project is anticipated to be completed in early 2027. This deployment aligns with Intrepid’s commitment to expanding access to world-class broadband across the US. With Louisville joining the network, Intrepid proudly extends its open-access service to over a dozen communities across Colorado.
Metronet targets Kokomo, Ind., with fiber-based internet
Metronet has unveiled its multimillion-dollar investment plans for Kokomo, Ind. It will provide fiber-based broadband speeds of up to 5 Gbps to homes and 10 Gbps to businesses throughout Kokomo. Metronet’s construction teams are expected to break ground in late spring, with the first customers expected to gain service by summer.
Ripple Fiber makes Central Massachusetts its next fiber expansion target
Ripple Fiber, a Southeast-based fiber internet provider, has set plans to enter Massachusetts, marking the company’s network expansion into the Northeast. With plans to start construction this spring, beginning in Holden and West Boylston, the provider aims to launch service by mid-2025, while actively expanding into new markets throughout the state. The anticipated investment for the first phase of this project totals over $140 million. Construction in additional areas of Worcester, Norfolk and Bristol Counties will begin soon, with announcements to follow in the coming months. As this phase rolls out, Ripple Fiber will open two dedicated offices, one in Worcester County and one in Bristol County, to ensure an enhanced customer experience and establish a strong local presence in every market.
TDS expanding 8 Gbps fiber network to Lake Hallie, Wisconsin
TDS Telecom is growing its Chippewa Valley fiber broadband footprint to include about 2,700 addresses in the village of Lake Hallie. Registrants will receive updates about the progress of the build and when services will be available at their address. Construction is expected to begin in Lake Hallie mid-year. Services will become available gradually, as network sections are completed. TDS announced its plans to expand to the Chippewa Valley in early 2022. The company finished its Chippewa Falls project last summer; its Eau Claire and Altoona builds are ongoing.
WOW! 100,000 passes with broadband service
WOW! has reached over 100,000 additional homes passed, including more than 80,000 fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) passings in its Greenfield markets, as well as DOCSIS 4.0-ready advanced HFC passings. This milestone is a result of its Greenfield and Edge-out market expansion efforts and marks significant progress toward passing 400,000 homes in new communities in the coming years. As part of its ongoing expansion strategy, WOW! has significantly increased its presence in Greenfield markets, areas where its services were previously unavailable, and Edge-outs, which extend service into communities adjacent to existing WOW! locations. markets. The company has activated customers across Livingston, Genesee, and Oakland counties in Michigan; Houston and Henry counties in Alabama; Greenville County in South Carolina; and Hernando, Orange, and Seminole counties in Florida.
