Building Broadband: Fidium begins fiber expansion in Gardiner, Maine; Fybe enables redundancy on its fiber broadband network
Fidium, Fybe, GoNetspeed, HyperFiber, IQ Fiber, Metronet, Surf Internet, unWired Broadband and Visionary Broadband are all expanding broadband in various communities through venture capital and state funding sources.
Fidium begins fiber expansion in Gardiner, Maine
Fidium is expanding its all-fiber internet network in Gardiner, bringing symmetrical, multi-gig speed internet to more than 9,300 homes and businesses. Fiber infrastructure construction is scheduled to begin as soon as March 15, with start dates varying by location. The expansion will upgrade Gardiner's internet access.
Fybe enables redundancy on its fiber broadband network
Fybe, a broadband service provider subsidiary of Roanoke Cooperative, has finished upgrading its Fiber to the Home (FTTH) network, resulting in 99.99% reliability with added redundancy. By bolstering network redundancy, customers should experience reduced incidents of lag, latency, or dropped internet, whether gaming, streaming, or working from home. Bo Coughlin, COO of Fybe, said it “has upgraded its core network to 100 Gbps, incorporating geographic and logical redundancy to ensure the highest level of reliability for our customers.”
GoNetspeed targets Wells and Ogunquit, Maine, with fiber broadband
GoNetspeed will soon start offering residents in Wells and Ogunquit its fiber internet service. The service provider’s privately funded $2.5 million investment in Wells and Ogunquit will bring fiber internet to more than 3,700 combined locations. GoNetspeed expects construction to begin this spring, with the first residents and businesses expected to be connected to fiber internet as early as this summer.
HyperFiber starts building fiber in Fort Lupton and Broomfield, Colorado
HyperFiber has commenced constructing a symmetrical fiber network in Broomfield and Fort Lupton, Colorado. Following the launch of services in Firestone late last year, HyperFiber is extending its Colorado service market further, offering residents in Fort Lupton and Broomfield “Internet. For Life.” HyperFiber plans to bring its fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) internet service to more than 200,000 passings in Colorado. The provider’s initial investment of $161 million in Colorado is just the beginning of expanding its high-speed fiber network throughout the state.
IQ Fiber extends fiber broadband service to St. Petersburg, Florida
IQ Fiber is expanding its 10-gig capable network to St. Petersburg and Pinellas County, continuing its growth across the Eastern United States. IQ Fiber has deployed its network in Jacksonville and across North Florida, including Alachua, Clay, Nassau, Duval, and St. Johns counties, with expansions underway in Savannah (Georgia), Charleston (South Carolina), and the Chesapeake Bay region (Maryland). IQ Fiber’s initial investment in St. Petersburg is estimated at nearly $50 million, with further expansion planned. Construction of the St. Petersburg and Pinellas County area network will begin this month and customers are expected to come online in late 2025.
Metronet invests $35M in Broken Arrow, Okla., fiber network
Metronet has begun connecting Broken Arrow, Oklahoma residents, to its fiber internet service. Residents in initial construction areas can now sign up for up to 5 Gbps, while businesses can access speeds of 10 Gbps. The service provider broke ground on its privately funded $35 million Broken Arrow construction project late last summer. As the network continues to expand neighborhood by neighborhood, more homes and businesses will gain access to Metronet’s fiber broadband service.
Surf Internet lights up Warsaw, Indiana, with fiber internet
Surf Internet has officially launched its fiber internet service in Warsaw, marking the first large-scale residential fiber deployment across much of the city. As part of a $4.1 million investment, Surf Internet is building out its fiber network to over 3,500 homes and businesses in Warsaw and nearby Winona Lake. The first construction phase is complete, making fiber internet available to 345 addresses. Residents can choose from 1 Gbps, 2 Gbps, and Surf Ultimate 8 Gbps plans. Surf Internet is expanding its fiber network across northern Indiana, including nearby communities like Pierceton and North Webster. Those outside the current service area can sign up for updates on future expansion.
unWired Broadband to Bring NextGen Fiber Internet to Gustine, CA
unWired Broadband has begun constructing its fiber Internet network in Gustine, CA. This multi-million-dollar project will deliver Internet speeds up to 5 Gbps and beyond to the City of Gustine, totaling nearly 2,500 addresses. Installations will begin in initial neighborhoods in April 2025, with construction slated to be completed in September 2025.
Visionary Broadband delivers fiber broadband to 10K homes in three Western states
Visionary Broadband has delivered fiber broadband service to over 10,000 residential customers across Wyoming, Colorado and Montana. The company’s 2024 efforts focused on bridging the digital divide by reaching communities historically left behind due to economic and geographic challenges. The company’s latest achievements include connecting 6,498 homes in Wyoming, 3,662 in Colorado, and 304 in Montana, to exceed the 10,000 milestone.
