FEBRUARY 1, 2007 -- Rostelecom (search for Rostelecom), Russia's national long-distance telecommunications operator, has launched a new high-speed digital line between Skovorodino, Aldan, and Yakutsk.
The new line was introduced due to the growing demand for telecom services from both residential customers and businesses of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).
The line, which stretches 1,035 km from Skovorodino (the Amur region) to Yakutsk through the towns of Tynda and Aldan, was constructed using SDH digital equipment.
"Rostelecom has a technologically advanced nationwide backbone network and we are constantly investing in its further development," notes Dmitry Yerokhin, Rostelecom's general director. "The new line of high capacity from Skovorodino to Yakutsk will enable the company to increase the number of channels, while improving the quality of domestic and international long-distance services along with expanding the range of services provided to residential and corporate customers in Yakutia."
"We highly appreciate that thanks to the launch of a new line, Yakutia will be provided with a wide range of modern telecom services to raise its industries and businesses' competitive level," adds Vladimir Chlenov, Minister of Transport, Communications, and Information of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) "In addition, it will give renewed impetus to the social and economic development of the Republic: the introduction of a digital line creates opportunities for the development of telemedicine, distance learning, and IP television, let alone the increased Internet access speed," he says.
Dmitry Gurevich, deputy general director and product management director of Rostelecom, reports that the carrier suspended fiber-optic cable in overhead power ground wire (OPGW) on power transmission lines.
He also notes that the new network segment will be part of a backup route from Chelyabinsk to Khabarovsk.
