NOVEMBER 15, 2006 -- Asia Netcom (search for Asia Netcom) today announced that it plans to expand its IP Transit 10G service to more Asian markets by 2007 to serve a burgeoning broadband appetite. The pan-regional carrier says it already has tasted success with its service in Japan when it introduced 10-Gbit/sec service in June this year.
Many end users are increasingly using video sharing sites, audio music sites, IPTV, VoIP applications, and Internet gaming, which has led some Asian Tier 1 ISP's to experience an explosion in broadband usage in the past year.
"Japan is a prime example of this phenomenon," reports John Garrett, Asia Netcom Japan's COO. "As end users begin using new services such as video sharing, audio file streaming, gaming and so on, our Tier 1 ISP customers report traffic requirements rising by 50-100% every year. To that end, we expect to grow our 10G IP Transit customers by a factor of four to five times in the next year," he says.
"The immediate benefit to customers is the price performance per Mbit/sec as they move from 1-Gbit/sec to 10-Gbit/sec infrastructure," adds Genius Wong, vice president of product development and management at Asia Netcom. "It also enhances the network efficiency as it eliminates the need to load-balance across multiple GE [Gigabit Ethernet] interfaces, as they plug directly into a 10-Gbit/sec port versus multiple 1-Gbit/sec ports. In addition, customers could enjoy fast bandwidth upgrade on the commitment level with Asia Netcom without upgrading their local loop subscriptions," he notes.
Asia Netcom's regional IP backbone consists of over 70 Gbits/sec of intra-Asia and trans-Pacific capacity. Backed by an extensive portfolio of peering relationships in key Asian and global markets, Asia Netcom's Internet backbone now offers one of the best Internet connectivity performances in the Asia Pacific region, say Asia Netcom representatives.
