FU-632SEA electro-absorption modulator laser-diode module includes an integrated external modulator for handling long- distance telephone, data and video transmissions. It has an operating speed of 2.5 Gbits/sec, with a 10-Gbit/sec version being developed. The module enables 30,000 telephone calls to be transmitted over a single fiber and combines a DFB laser and electro-absorption modulator on a single GaAs substrate. The unit costs $7000 in quantities of 100.
