Optical time-domain reflectometer

Lynx handheld otdr measures loss and locates faults in singlemode optical-fiber communications networks operating at 1310 or 1550 nm at distances to 80 km, with ۫-m accuracy. Dynamic range is 22 and 20 dB at 1310 and 1550 nm, respectively, and loss resolution is 0.1 dB. Faults and a graphical display are shown automatically on a back-lit 320 ¥ 240-pixel LCD. Measurement time ranges from 30 seconds to 10 minutes, depending on the complexity of the test; 25 sets of measurements can be stored internally in nonvolatile memory. Data can be downloaded to a PC via an RS-232C serial communications interface. The 8 ¥ 6.5 ¥ 2.5-inch otdr weighs 2.2 lbs and operates up to 6 hours with its removable NiCad battery pack. The unit is priced from $8400.
