NEC, AT&T demo 'record-breaking' spectral efficiency at 100G

April 21, 2008
APRIL 21, 2008 -- NEC and AT&T say they generated multiple WDM optical signals, each loaded with 114 Gbits/sec within a 25-GHz-wide portion of the optical spectrum. This technique resulted in the highest spectral efficiency ever achieved for long-haul optical transmission, claim the companies.

APRIL 21, 2008 -- NEC Corporation of America (search for NEC), together with AT&T Labs, has successfully demonstrated innovative schemes for modulation and transmission of high-speed optical signals at 40- and 100-Gbit/sec data rates. This work was initially described at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference, February 24-28, 2008.

NEC and AT&T say they generated multiple WDM optical signals, each loaded with 114 Gbits/sec within a 25-GHz-wide portion of the optical spectrum. This technique resulted in the highest spectral efficiency ever achieved for long-haul optical transmission, claim the companies. The experiment to demonstrate this transmission over 640 km of fiber was performed by NEC Laboratories America in collaboration with AT&T Labs in Middletown, NJ.

"NEC enjoys a rich, global research and development culture that has kept us at the forefront in this sector," notes Dr. Milorad Cvijetic, vice president and chief technology strategist, Optical Network Systems Division, NEC Corporation of America. "We introduced new record-breaking results in transmission of 100G signals, which once again validates our record as one of the premier players in the optical arena."
