JUNE 18, 2008 -- Infinera (search for Infinera) reports that it has won an RFQ at Deutsche Telekom for its pan-European network. DT will deploy the Infinera system to take advantage of Infinera's Digital Optical Networks architecture for its improved scalability, flexibility, and speed of service delivery, according to Infinera. These capabilities are enabled by Infinera's use of large-scale photonic integrated circuits (PICs; search for PICs), combining the functions of dozens of discrete optical devices into a single pair of chips. As part of its global network, DT's pan-European network spans almost 9,000 km and links Germany with most major European markets.
Infinera's new ILS2 (Infinera Line System 2) system system offers up to 160 DWDM channels in the C-band, extends optical reach to 2,500 km, and enables future capacity scalability up to 8 Tbits/sec on a fiber. [See "Infinera Puts New PICs into Line", by Stephen Hardy]. The ILS2 system works with Infinera's current PICs, which put 100 Gbits/sec of DWDM capacity on a pair of chips, and will be compatible with future generations of Infinera PICs, including the 400-Gbit/sec PICs Infinera announced in February.
Infinera's Digital Optical Networks architecture exploits the use of PICs to create a scalable, flexible, and cost-effective architecture that enables network operators to deliver services, including highly differentiated services, quickly and flexibly in response to customer demands. The company says its Bandwidth Virtualization enables a range of optical services to be delivered over the same optical infrastructure by decoupling the service from the underlying optical infrastructure.
Like many network operators, DT faces the challenges of rising demand for bandwidth. Infinera says its GMPLS service intelligence gives network operators greater power to segment portions of their network, offering specific resources and services to specific customers.
"We selected the Infinera system to prepare for the next generation of international network operations and to help our customers to take advantage of this innovative and highly efficient solution with the most flexibility, quickest service provisioning, and complete remote capabilities," says Wolf Pueschner, global networks, Deutsche Telekom.
