Alcatel Submarine Networks, Paris, won a contract worth European Currency Unit 71 million ($90.3 million) to supply and install a fiber-optic submarine telecommunications system between Port Hedland, Australia and Jakarta, Indonesia. Known as Jasuraus, this 2800-kilometer system will have a transmission capacity of 5 gigabits per second, allowing 60,000 simultaneous telephone conversations, as well as videophone, computer data transmission and multimedia.
