Cogent Communications to provide IP access for bConvergent's virtual phone service

Feb. 21, 2001
Feb. 21, 2001--Cogent Communications, a next-generation Internet Service Provider (ISP), announced it has signed an agreement to provide services to bConvergent, a provider of Hosted PBX and Voice-Enabled Virtual Private Networking.

Cogent Communications, a next-generation Internet Service Provider (ISP), announced it has signed an agreement to provide services to bConvergent, a provider of Hosted PBX and Voice-Enabled Virtual Private Networking. BConvergent claims that their bVirtual PBX completely eliminates the need for all customer premise telephone hardware and wiring, and reduces customer telephone bills by as much as 50 percent. bConvergent's technology relies on Cogent's all-optical national IP network to deliver better than carrier class service. Cogent's network enables bConvergent to offer functionality that exceeds traditional systems to businesses in multi-tenant commercial properties with as few as one, or as many as 100, phones.

The offering will be available immediately in New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. where a large concentration of multi-tenant office buildings are being equipped with Cogent's all-optical infrastructure. Businesses in these properties can sign up for Cogent's 100Mbps of non-oversubscribed Internet access -- or 65 times more bandwidth than standard T1 access -- for a price of $1,000 per month. By routing traffic over Cogent's ultra-high speed network before hopping off to the PSTN, bConvergent is able to provide bVirtual PBX customers with long distance rates of less than 3 cents per minute and unlimited local calling for as low as $15 per month. Additionally, bConvergent's bVirtual PBX solution does not require the purchase or installation of a phone system. Instead, customers receive new business phones that operate on the existing IP Network and require no on-site hardware, additional wiring or special installation. These new sets are fully equipped with custom calling features, as well as voice mail, unified messaging, and complete integration with industry-leading email and contact management systems.
