SMC Networks, a solutions provider of network products engineered to increase the performance and productivity of small-to-medium size organizations, announced the launch of its TigerStack 100, (SMC2964VF), a Fast Ethernet Stackable Fiber Switch that incorporates the VF-45 interconnect fiber optic connection technology, made by 3M and sold through their Volition Network Solutions group.

Incorporating the feature set of 3M's Volition Network Solution allows SMC to provide the first fiber optic switch that achieves port density of 28 100Base-FX ports per unit thereby reducing the cost per port by up to as much as 50 percent.

The TigerStack 100 is stackable up to four units, which delivers 104 fiber optic Fast Ethernet ports at an approximate street price of $165 per port.

By utilizing full-duplex VF-45 connectors, which are similar in size and form to the RJ-45 modular jack, TigerStack 100 enables networking at the speed and bandwidth capacity of fiber optic networks, while employing a connection technology that reduces component costs, simplifies installation and maintenance, and requires half the space of the duplex SC connector.

When stacked up to four units high, the TigerStack 100 is capable of handling of up to 104 ports under a single IP while supporting up to 256 VLANs. It also incorporates port trunking, port security and mirroring features, with non-blocking switch fabric and bandwidth capability between switches of up to 4.8 Gbps.

The enclosure of the managed TigerStack 100 base unit contains 24 100Base-FX VF-45 ports and three expansion slots, one of which is dedicated for a management module. Other expansion modules include the Gigabit, 100FX uplink and 2Gbps stacking modules.

Backed by a limited lifetime warranty and SMC's 24/7 technical support, the TigerStack 100 switch is available now at an estimated street price of $4,000.
