Lumentis doubles FiberChannel and Gigabit Ethernet for CWDM

- "Higher network utilisation and lower channel cost for CWDM networks"

25 June 2003 Stockholm--Lumentis has announced an addition to its all-in-one transport Mentis platform that offers CWDM, DWDM, and SONET/SDH in a single system.

Lumentis says it can now offer its customers two new single-slot transponder boards that aggregates FiberChannel and GigabitEthernet signals into 2.5-Gbit/s CWDM wavelengths, in addition to the previously released compact, single-slot CWDM 4-channel transponder and the CWDM SDH/SONET Muxponder board.

"The majority of customers are running their traffic over standard fibre and they are in practice restricted to 8 wavelengths when using CWDM. We can now offer them a lower channel cost as well as doubled capacity up to 16 channels for GbE and FiberChannel traffic," said Ulf Persson, Director of Systems and Network Design at Lumentis.

"This opens up new possibilities in the SAN and Enterprise market segment as we further can remove cost as well as capacity restrictions for these applications."

Performance monitoring and extra data channel are included in the new CWDM transponder boards. This results in improved quality-of-service as well as further cost savings in infrastructure for network management, Lumentis claims.

The platform comprises four elements: CWDM, DWDM, SONET/SDH MuxFeeder and a network management component that offers easy integration to any existing management system.

Due to the elimination of amplifiers and the portfolio of single-slot, plug-in boards, Lumentis believes it is the first provider to feature a true all-in-one optical transport platform where each deployed link will always have the best price-performance without additional overhead costs.

For CWDM applications, the Mentis system can carry up to eight wavelengths on one fibre pair. For DWDM applications, up to 40 wavelengths are possible on one fibre pair. Furthermore, both applications can be mixed on the same fibre pair and each wavelength can be aggregated channels.

Lumentis
Lumentis provides optical transport solutions for city and regional optical networks that reduces capital and operational expenses. It offers an all-in-one CWDM, DWDM and SONET/SDH platform that shares the same chassis, fibre pair and network management platform to help reduce operational costs, remove overhead costs and simplify network design.

The Lumentis platform enables the elimination of amplifiers without sacrificing network utilization. Lumentis delivers solutions to both mobile and city carriers as well as to the enterprise and financial sector.
