bayernwerk netkom (Munchen, Germany), a German network operator, has purchased optical networking equipment from Lucent Technologies (Murray Hill, NJ) through a contract worth nearly $5.5 million. Lucent`s dense wavelength-division multiplexing equipment will increase the capacity of bayernwerk`s 7000-km nationwide fiber-optic network by a factor of 16 without the use of additional fiber. Also in Germany, Lucent will invest approximately $58 million in a new research and development center in Nuremberg for advanced optical networking technology.
