3/21/00 Tyco Submarine Systems Ltd. (Morristown, NJ), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tyco International Ltd., signed a memorandum of understanding with the Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board (BTTB) to design the Bangladesh-Singapore Submarine Cable System.
Scheduled for completion in 2002, the system will connect Bangladesh and Singapore and will be approximately 3,200 km in length. This system will enable Bangladesh to link into some of the major undersea cable systems that land in Singapore, giving Bangladesh worldwide connectivity. The supply contract for the project will have an approximate value of $150 million U.S. dollars.
The signing of the agreement on March 20 coincided with President Clinton's mission to Bangladesh. U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary William M. Daley was in attendance at the signing ceremony, along with K. A. Matin, chairman of BTTB, and Rajesh Kheny, managing director of the Asia-Pacific Region for Tyco Submarine Systems.
