December 10, 2002-Juniper Networks (Sunnyvale, CA) today announced that China Telecom is building its IP/MPLS network using Juniper Networks T320 and M20 routers. China Telecom selected Juniper Networks because its products are optimized for MPLS-based services.

The deployment of T-series routers in China Telecom's network complements the successful activation of the ERX and M-series routers in the Wuhan, Shanghai, and Sichuan provinces earlier this year. The network provides China Telecom with the opportunity to deploy advanced IP/MPLS services, including tiered access, IP VPNs, and metro Ethernet applications. The MPLS-optimized architecture also enables the transport of Frame Relay and ATM traffic over Layer 2 VPNs, ensuring support for both legacy traffic and new IP services over a single IP/MPLS network. This promotes network efficiency and scalability in order to take advantage of the growing demand for data services in China. According to the China Internet Network Information Center, Internet users in China grew more than 170 percent, from 26 million in July 2001 to 45 million in July 2002.

"As the migration from offering the traditional connectivity services to new value-added IP services continues, we require a platform that scales to multiple 10-Gbit/sec interfaces in a very compact form factor, while also delivering rich, dependable IP service functionality and quality assurance at high speeds," said Mr. Sun Hao, deputy general manager, China Telecom Beijing. "Given the proven track record of the Juniper Networks ERX and M-series routers installed in the China Telecom network, we are confident that the T320 routers provide us with a reliable and high-density platform for delivering new revenue-generating services with reliability and scale."

The T320 router enables service providers to deploy ultra-dense OC-3 ATM, SONET/SDH aggregation today to provide transport of ATM and Frame Relay customer traffic over MPLS. The platform scales to dense 10 Gigabit interfaces as China Telecom grows its network. It also supports dense Gigabit Ethernet and 10 Gigabit Ethernet aggregation critical to metro Ethernet and hosting applications. For more information, visit the company's Web site, www.juniper.net.
