CenturyLink field trials ADTRAN 10G-PON OLT for virtualized XGS-PON and NG-PON2

ADTRAN, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADTN) says that CenturyLink, Inc. (NYSE: CTL) has used its virtualized10G-PON OLT system for a field trial. ADTRAN asserts that this is the first U.S. deployment of a disaggregated software-defined access (SD-access) system.

"The move to an open, programmable, and scalable access network will facilitate CenturyLink's service agility and support faster deployment of services and applications for our customers," said Aamir Hussain, CenturyLink executive vice president and chief technology officer. "This solution will enable us to reduce operating costs through the economies of data center architectures and automate our networks as we look to offer 10G services and beyond."

According to ADTRAN, the open architecture approach improves the path to SD-Access, enabling customers to build a simplified service delivery platform that can leverage an array of next-generation access technologies for fixed or mobile connectivity. The platform is likely similar to that which ADTRAN has offered Verizon as part of that carrier's NG-PON2 trials (see "Ericsson/Calix, ADTRAN prep for Verizon NG-PON2 finals").

It has been a year since ADTRAN unveiled its Mosaic portfolio, including the Mosaic Cloud Platform, the Mosaic OS operating system, and programmable network elements (see "ADTRAN Mosaic platform aims at software-defined access networks").
