SEPTEMBER 5, 2006 -- Lucent Technologies Inc. (search Lucent Technologies) today announced a teaming agreement with Novera Optics Ltd. (search Novera Optics) to provide DWDM transport platforms to service providers in Japan.

The optical offering will leverage Novera Optics' Lambda-PON technology to deliver fiber-to-the-x (FTTx) applications to end-users. Per the agreement, Lucent services team in Japan will actively market, sell, and provide network integration support for DWDM metro transport and PON systems based on Novera's technology.

Novera Optics' platforms are designed in a modular form so they may be easily integrated into existing network architectures, say company representatives. The resulting systems offer the potential for significant capital and operational savings as carriers deliver FTTx broadband access technologies to their customers.

Novera Optics offers two series of transport platforms: SpeedlLIGHT and TurboLIGHT. By utilizing Novera Optics' Lambda-PON technology, both platforms enable a range of differentiated, dedicated, point-to-point connectivity services by allowing any protocol and any data rate to be carried over the same fiber infrastructure, explains the company.

Novera Optics says that its WDM-PON (search WDM-PON) offers significantly simplified networks. WDM-PON is designed to deliver a dedicated Lambda per end user, thereby eliminating wavelength-specific and expensive tunable lasers--making the deployment of the technology into metro and access area network possible today. Alternatively, WDM-PON could be used as an access network extension to support other PON or active Ethernet solutions.

"The agreement with Novera Optics enables us to offer our customers a unique value-added transport platform that will help as they continue to migrate to next-generation services," notes Lowell Bath, director of services, Lucent Technologies, Japan.

"The relationship between Novera Optics and Lucent strengthens our position in the DWDM PON transport market," adds Bernd Hesse, vice president of marketing and business development at Novera Optics. "Entering the Japanese market with a partner like Lucent is a significant milestone for the proven DWDM-PON technology Novera offers."
