MARCH 16, 2009 -- PMC-Sierra Inc. (search Lightwave for PMC-Sierra) says it can now offer MAC chips for symmetric 10-Gbps IEEE 802.3av EPON, including optical line terminal (OLT) and optical network unit (ONU) applications.

The company will demonstrate the devices in conjunction with the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition (OFC), March 23-26, 2009, at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel in San Diego.

The PAS8011 system for 10G OLTs and the PAS9011 system for 10G ONUs integrate all the functionality required from an OLT and ONU running at 10-Gbps rates, including transceivers, according to PMC-Sierra. They are interoperable with the company's existing EPON devices to facilitate a smooth and gradual upgrade from 1G EPON to 10G EPON while lowering carriers' capital and operational expenditures. 1G and 10G EPON streams can be transmitted over the same fiber as part of this transition.

The chips feature backward-compatible service dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA), which enables configurable high system performance in a multi-service environment for access, wireless backhaul, and cable TV networks. The devices are IEEE standard compliant and interoperable, following carrier requirements.

The PAS8011 system for 10G OLTs and PAS9011 system for 10G ONUs, both FPGA-based, are available now. Reference designs are also available.
