JULY 15, 2008 -- Xelerated (search for Xelerated) has announced a new reference design for GPON OLTs that combines its new HX300 family of network processor units (NPUs) and Ethernet switches with BroadLight's (search for BroadLight) BL3458 controller. The fully integrated GPON design enables carriers to deploy revenue-generating services while reducing costs, increasing time-to-market, and ultimately enabling mass volume deployment, the company says.
"The GPON OLT market is expected to show tremendous growth over the next few years as carriers in North America and Europe build out GPON infrastructure. The combined Xelerated/Broadlight OLT solution provides a unique combination of high integration and feature flexibility," said Bob Wheeler, senior analyst at The Linley Group. "This solution drives down cost for the network equipment vendor while allowing carriers to benefit from programmability in the access network -- ultimately providing for easier and more rapid introduction of new services."
Xelerated's HX300 family of devices offers seamless support of Broadlight's 2.5G mode interface, according to the vendor. The combination is suited for both chassis-based GPON systems as well as ETSI-based "pizza boxes." The chassis-based design typically uses Xelerated's HX310 series of programmable Ethernet switches on the line card to reduce costs while Xelerated's HX330 series of NPUs is used on the uplink card to terminate TR-101 and metro Ethernet services, as well as ETSI-based pizza boxes. Using this approach, network equipment vendors can now increase their densities on the line card to 16 GPON ports per line card, driving down costs and power while increasing integration, Xelerated asserts.
"This is a natural step for us. We have been working with several lead customers to find the right balance of system partitioning for the lowest possible cost. Now we can allow our customers to deliver unprecedented service density to drive new revenue-generating services," said Thomas Eklund, vice president of marketing and business development at Xelerated.
"We are very excited to work with Xelerated on this innovative GPON solution," said Doron Tal, vice president of business development and product management at Broadlight. "By offering glueless support between the BL3458 Quad GPON OLT device and the HX300 family of devices, we offer a pre-tested and fully integrated solution to our customer which ultimately shortens the time-to-market."
The HX300-based reference design for GPON will be available in Q4 2008.
