Slic Network Solutions picks Alloptic for high-speed connectivity project in New York state

"Alloptic provides us flexibility for service development as we move forward and allows us to provide a leading edge access network while cost effectively utilizing our embedded core network."

Massena is a town of approximately 13,000 residents, adjacent to the U.S.-Canadian border on the St. Lawrence River. With a strong economy based on manufacturing and retail, Massena is now pursuing a progressive development strategy designed to encourage high-tech business development in the town.

The EPON technology is being deployed as part of a public-private partnership between the community of Massena and Slic Network Solutions, Nicholville Telephone's commercial network service subsidiary. By sharing resources and working towards the common goal of achieving an advanced, high-tech community, the partners are installing a fiber-optic network designed to deliver advanced broadband and Internet services to the town's end-users.

The initial phase of the Massena project includes dedicated data connections to 16 municipal sites, including the village and town offices, police department, department of public works, airport, library, and water treatment plant, which are physically situated in various corners of the community. The network will enable fiber-based broadband connections for transmission of high-speed data, Internet access, and robust e-mail applications to each location at speeds up to 100 Mbits/sec. It will also offer the capability to centralize data storage and retrieval, and will create the foundation for a private voice network between locations.

Subsequent phases of service deployment will target small- to mid-size commercial and public entities such as retail, legal, accounting, medical and hotel operations as well as multi-tenant buildings. Slic is installing and testing project hardware for the first phase of the project and will complete network configuration and end-user connections next month. Data connectivity along with Internet access is scheduled to begin in May.
