Huawei has added what it calls the "Flexible NG-PON solution" to its recently announced Any Media Giga Access Solution (see "Huawei targets cross-infrastructure gigabit broadband with Any Media Giga Access Platform"). The new capabilities include support of multiple types of next-generation PON architectures in a single card.

The offering is based on Huawei's MA5800 optical line terminal (OLT) platform. The line card will support multiple xG-PON (asymmetrical), xGS-PON (symmetrical), and 40G TWDM-PON optical module configurations. This multi-architecture support will enable operators to gradually increase the capacity and configuration of their fiber-optic broadband networks, Huawei says, by swapping out optical modules. The system's design therefore reduces spare part inventory and shrinks operation and maintenance costs.

Huawei expects the new technology to support a wide range of applications, including passive optical LAN (POL) based campus requirements, private line access for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), small office and home office (SOHO) services, mobile backhaul, and network wholesale for virtual network operators (VNOs).
