Telefonica trials XGS-PON for broadband, 5G support

Nokia says that Telefónica has conducted lab trials of the systems house's XGS-PON fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) technology. The technology, which supports symmetrical 10-Gbps optical transmission, could not only improve the carrier's broadband services but support the roll out of 5G mobile services, Nokia asserts.

XGS-PON improves upon its 10-Gbps predecessor XG-PON1 in that it will support 10 Gbps in the upstream. XG-PON1 will support only 2.5 Gbps upstream; the fact that it won't support symmetrical services is one reason the technology has not proven popular. The symmetrical 10-Gbps bandwidth can be applied to both broadband services provision as well as provide a mobile backhaul capability and support aggregation of remote access traffic in high-speed mobile broadband services scenarios such as 5G, Nokia says.

"New services, competition, and future symmetrical ultra broadband access require enhanced fixed access technology," said Francisco Javier Fabián, Fixed Access and Real State Director at Telefónica. "We are sure that XGS-PON is the correct choice to fulfill demands for gigabit bandwidth and will support the higher symmetric bandwidth required to support 5G backhaul in the future."

"Streaming services, gaming, and HD video continue to drive demand for gigabit services, and the use of next-generation fiber technologies like XGS-PON will play a critical role in Telefonica's ability to deliver these enhanced services to customers -- by wireless or fixed networks," added Federico Guillen, president of Nokia's Fixed Networks business group.
