AEPONYX to launch C-Band 10G WDM-PON at OFC 2015

Montreal-based WDM-PON specialist AEPONYX inc. says it will take the wraps off of what it asserts is the first standards-based 10-Gbps 40-channel WDM-PON offering at OFC 2015. The single-fiber system is designed to operate on the C-Band 50-GHz ITU grid.

Montreal-based WDM-PON specialist AEPONYX inc. says it will take the wraps off of what it asserts is the first standards-based 10-Gbps 40-channel WDM-PON offering at OFC 2015. The single-fiber system is designed to operate on the C-Band 50-GHz ITU grid.

The system leverages the AEPONYX Colormux C/2 and Colornode C/2 WDM-PON passives as well as tunable SFP+ optical transceivers operating at 10 Gbps (T-SFP+) and 1-Gbps and 10-Gbps fixed transceivers. It expands upon the company's previous WDM-PON offering (watch the video "AEPONYX's WDM-PON Solutions").

"The recent commercial availability and competitive supply of tunable SFP+ able to tune on a 50-GHz grid has justified the development of the first standards-based and fully interoperable single-fiber WDM-PON solution based on the use of half the C-Band in each direction," states AEPONYX CTO and Co-Founder Francois Menard. "We have redesigned our WDM-PON central office multiplexer/demultiplexer as well as the WDM-PON remote node around a 50-GHz C-Band AAWG and have integrated the necessary WDM filters to enable single-fiber operation.

"The Colornode C/2 and the C/2 WDM Filtercord are the cornerstones of our newest WDM-PON solution," Menard continues. "The use of WDM filters allows simple and cost-effective single-fiber operation. Operators can overlay WDM-PON on all existing GPON single-fiber outside plants, providing up to 160 times more capacity than GPON."

The system also is designed to support significant bandwidth upgrades, including 100 Gbps via the incorporation of CFP-2 ACO coherent optical transceivers, Menard adds.

The system conforms to the ITU 50 GHz G.694.1 standard. The fact that the system leverages the common DWDM specifications rather than emerging WDM-PON guidelines means that operators can incorporate commercially available Carrier Ethernet switches and network interface devices rather than having to wait for potentially more expensive network elements and CPE specific to WDM-PON.
