May 25, 2005 Boca Raton, FL -- Siemens Communications this week unveiled a new family of broadband passive optical network (BPON) products that enable service providers to offer cost-effective and faster deployments to customers with last-mile bandwidth challenges, say company representatives. Siemens' BPON portfolio includes a flexible and robust set of fiber-to-the-premise (FTTP) optical network terminal (ONT) and optical network unit (ONU) solutions.
With six different product options, the Siemens BPON family supports multiple environments such as single-family residences, businesses, and multi-dwelling housing units. The standards-based design of the BPON family also supports myriad deployment model options, including copper wire, Ethernet, and cable capabilities for integrated data, voice, and video services. Residential and business customers benefit from single-provider access to the home and a single connection for emerging services such as voice over Internet protocol (VoIP), Internet protocol television (IPTV), and other high-speed broadband offerings.
"Siemens' entry into the BPON market strengthens the company's position as a provider of strategic end-to-end solutions for the digital home," contends Ron Westfall, broadband principal analyst with Current Analysis. "The combination of multiple options, future-proof features, high performance, and cost effectiveness makes the Siemens BPON family an appealing choice for service providers looking to diversify their service offerings to customers."
Other features of the Siemens BPON family include:
• High throughput with up to 100 Mbits/sec on an Ethernet port and up to 622 Mbits/sec over a full service access network (FSAN)-compatible fiber connection;
• Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) capable to support current and next-generation network requirements;
• Integrated radio frequency (RF) return channel for integration with subscriber facilities;
• Power management lifeline services via battery backup and battery monitoring; and
• Hardened enclosure for outdoor environments.
"With the introduction of the BPON family, Siemens continues to advance its fiber solutions strategy and our commitment to the LifeWorks@Com vision of unified communication experiences across networks, devices, and geographies," adds Harald Braun, president of Siemens Carrier Networks, Siemens Communications. "This is a significant last-mile solution for advancing the triple-play alignment of data, voice, and video services without bandwidth constraints."
