September 12, 2005 Petaluma, CA -- K-Opticom, a tier-1 service provider in Japan, has selected the Teknovus TK37xx family of Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) chipsets for exclusive use in the next phase of the provider's "EO Hikari" FTTH deployment. The provider says it will employ the chipset's integrated service-management functionality to offer advanced broadband services including VoIP, as well as Japan's first Gigabit EPON service.

"Our company is engaged in mass deployment of fiber-based services for residential customers in the most competitive market in the world," comments Tadao Tanabe, president and CEO of K-Opticom. "For us to succeed, the solutions we deploy must meet several stringent requirements. First, the equipment must have an extremely aggressive price-per-subscriber given the economics of mass deployment. Second, the solution we deploy today must be robust and upgradeable. Lastly, our services must be superior to those offered by our competitors. After an intense evaluation of all alternatives, we are confident that Teknovus-based equipment satisfies these requirements and enables us to meet our objectives in the marketplace."

"The Telecom market is extremely challenging, from both technical and competitive perspectives," adds Dr. Rex Naden, CEO of Teknovus. "Carriers and equipment manufacturers are demanding silicon solutions with integrated support for key features like high-definition IPTV and gigabit-speed Ethernet services. We are honored by the confidence that K-Opticom and its suppliers have placed in Teknovus, and we look forward to supporting them in this new phase of their growth."

Teknovus says the selection marks the third exclusive deployment of its EPON products in FTTH networks in Asia.
