UK’s Truespeed deploys XGS-PON FTTH with Adtran

UK fiber to the home (FTTH) broadband provider Truespeed has deployed XGS-PON technology from Adtran in its network. The Bath-based service provider is leveraging a recent funding round to help pay for the FTTH network upgrade.

Deployments of XGS-PON are underway after successful field trials. Truespeed is now connecting initial customers in Peasedown St John to the updated FTTH network. In addition to the ability to offer faster speeds in the future (Truespeed is offering up to 900 Mbps now), the network upgrade is designed to streamline new connections, reduce the number of aboveground cabinets, enable greater future network expansion, and significantly improve the efficiency of network builds.

“Utilizing XGS-PON is a huge step forward for Truespeed as we continue on our mission to improve connectivity throughout the South West,” commented James Lowther, Truespeed’s CEO. “We’re rolling out our network faster than ever before, and this step-change in technology will enable us to deliver our substantial growth plans in the most time- and cost-effective manner whilst providing the best possible customer service.”

“The vision demonstrated by the Truespeed team is refreshing,” added Ronan Kelly, Adtran EMEA CTO. “Not only have they recognized the technology benefits that the Adtran XGS-PON solution brings, from the beginning they have had a very clear vision of the environmental benefits that this technology can deliver to their business, and how it can accelerate their deployment schedule by concentrating more customers across fewer equipment locations. Insights that many others would do well to pay attention to.”

Truespeed’s expansion aspirations received a boost this past January when it received £100 million ($117.2 million) of investment from Aviva Investors. Aviva also provided £75 million ($87.9 million) to Truespeed in 2017.
