Nokia to provide Metronet with next-gen 10G PON

June 23, 2022
Privately held Metronet operates fiber-to-the-premises networks that provide residential, commercial, and municipal customers with symmetrical gigabit connectivity.

As a part of its strategy to bring high-speed connectivity to underserved regions, Metronet has selected Nokia as its supplier for next-generation PON technology.

Privately held Metronet operates fiber-to-the-premises networks that provide residential, commercial, and municipal customers with symmetrical gigabit connectivity. The company currently has networks in 16 states. Nokia’s XGS-PON systems will allow Metronet to leverage its existing and newly constructed fiber infrastructure to deploy 10G broadband speeds with a migration path to 25G.

The system is designed to deliver GPON, 10G PON, and 25G PON without the need to replace hardware. Metronet is rolling out XGS-PON in eight new markets with more communities planned. It is using Nokia’s ONT Easy Start SaaS to speed up and simplify the provisioning of fiber modems in customer homes.

“Nokia’s technology is enabling us to future-proof our investments in fiber as we continue to expand our network,” said Kevin Stelmach, president of commercial markets at Metronet. “We are also able to future-proof the cities and communities that we serve with a communications network that can grow with them, encouraging business investment with virtually limitless capacity available when and where it’s needed.”
