Calix unveils 10G PON Calix GigaPoint ONT

Nov. 23, 2020
Part of the company’s AXOS Intelligent Access EDGE portfolio, the ONT helps service providers deliver higher upstream and downstream transmission speeds as well as advanced services, says Calix.

Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) has introduced the 10G PON Calix GigaPoint optical network terminal (ONT). Part of the company’s AXOS Intelligent Access EDGE portfolio, the ONT helps service providers deliver higher upstream and downstream transmission speeds as well as advanced services, says Calix.

The first customer to deploy the new ONT, specifically the GigaPoint GP1100X, is Chariton Valley of Macon, MO. The indoor ONT, with a 2.5G Ethernet (GE) LAN port, will mesh with Chariton Valley’s XGS-PON fiber to the home (FTTH) network to enable delivery of IPTV and data services, along with a voice line that supports carrier-grade VoIP. Chariton Valley, which serves residential and business customers within a 7,565-square-mile footprint in the northeast corner of Missouri, is also deploying the AXOS E7-2 Intelligent Modular System as well as the new GigaPoint ONT.

“All service providers today are facing subscribers who are home for increasingly long stretches and using broadband service at levels we have never seen before,” said Kirby Underberg, CEO at Chariton Valley. “We needed a platform that could scale as our FTTH network and subscriber base grew—one that would enable us to deliver services that match subscriber demand without causing our costs to skyrocket. During our evaluations, it became clear that the software-defined Calix AXOS platform would scale to meet our bandwidth needs while lowering our total cost of ownership. Furthermore, we take pride in owning the network end-to-end, deploying the EXOS platform, GigaSpire BLAST Systems, and CommandIQ app to deliver the ultimate subscriber experience. Calix provided a complete end-to-end solution that competing vendors simply couldn’t match.”

“Next-generation 10G-PON technologies like XGS-PON and NG-PON2 offer the scalability, flexibility, and reliability to deliver a future of converged everyPON network. With these technologies, CSPs will be able to offer more speeds and the advanced services subscribers demand,” commented Michel Langlois, chief development officer, Intelligent Access EDGE products, at Calix. “Chariton Valley is at the forefront of this evolution, building, operating, and innovating with its network—all while reducing operating costs. This ability to remain resource-efficient while delivering differentiated services keep Chariton Valley well ahead of the competition.”
