Three River preps for 10G XGS-PON capabilities with ADTRAN

The Nebraska rural service provider will leverage the “Combo PON” capabilities of the TA5000 to support symmetrical 10G XGS-PON and 2.5G GPON services simultaneously from the same port and within a single fiber strand.

ADTRAN, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADTN) says that it will supply its Total Access 5000 (TA5000) fiber access and packet optical transport platform to Three River. The Nebraska rural service provider will leverage the Combo PON” capabilities of the TA5000 to support symmetrical 10G XGS-PON and 2.5G GPON services simultaneously from the same port and within a single fiber strand. ADTRAN also will supply its Mosaic Subscriber Suite for network insight and management requirements.

The broadband technology supplier reports that Three River, a family of telecommunications companies operating since 1898, originally had planned the fiber broadband network upgrade to last several years. However, the project schedule accelerated due to COVID-19 and the increased broadband bandwidth demands that it created. The upgrade project will affect the fiber ring that connects Three River’s ILEC and CLEC networks as well as the links that provide fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) based services.

“It is certainly clear now in 2020 just how critical connectivity is for our customers, especially students and employees that are forced to learn and work from home. We needed to invest in our network, and we knew the 10G capacity of XGS-PON was the right path. We wanted our customers to have access to broadband that was as good or better than what is available in most major cities,” commented Steven Dorf, CEO and general manager at The Three River Family of Companies. “ADTRAN is helping us realize this future-proof network strategy with a powerful one-two punch—a solution set that not only allows us to cut our network upgrade time by more than half, but also get a vastly improved in-home network experience into the hands of our FTTH subscribers.”

ADTRAN asserts that in-home experience will be enhanced by use of the company’s Mosaic Subscriber Suite, including the Mosaic Customer Experience, Powered by Plume. The suite enables all-in-one subscriber insight and management, including cloud-based device installation, activation, automated service optimization, and restoration, according to the company. The suite also can reduce the number of truck rolls Three River companies must launch. Such service calls can run 100 miles roundtrip in rural Nebraska, ADTRAN points out.
