MARCH 26, 2007 -- Pirelli Broadband Solutions (search for Pirelli) has announced that it will collaborate with Telecom Italia, together with Alcatel-Lucent and Italtel, at the C5 World Forum on a working demonstration of fiber-to-the-building/fiber-to-the-cabinet (FTTB/FTTC) using WDM-PON technology (search for WDM-PON). The C5 World Forum will take place in Milan from March 27-28.
The Pirelli stand (#4028) will act as the access central office, with a WDM-PON optical line termination (OLT) unit delivering one optical channel to each of the following stands, which for demonstration purposes will represent city buildings: Telecom Italia (#2001), Alcatel-Lucent (#2015), and Italtel (#3001/#4001). Each stand "building" will have an optical network termination (ONT) unit to receive Gigabit Ethernet bandwidth for the delivery of premium telecom services.
Mauro Sacchetto, chief executive officer at Pirelli Broadband Solutions, says, "With the arrival of faster broadband access technologies such as VDSL2 and FTTX, the metro and access networks will take the brunt of the stress. Our systems and subsystems are designed especially for optimizing the metro and access networks and providing the necessary flexibility to accommodate various network architectures."
Pirelli says it will also feature its latest technology for "the connected home." From the DSLAM, the signal will enter the Pirelli stand "house" through Pirelli's VDSL2 gateway and connect to the company's Discus DEX W Wireless Video Extender, which will distribute the high-definition signal throughout the home network. The company's portfolio of wired and wireless adapters are fundamental devices linking its xDSL and fiber-based gateways, hybrid set-top boxes for IPTV and DTT, and SIP-based GSM/Wi-Fi handsets. Pirelli's TR-069-based CPE will be managed and provisioned by the Discus Remote Management Platform.
This week, Pirelli is also demonstrating the interoperability between its MSA 300-pin duobinary transponder and its ultralong-reach DWDM XFP32 transceiver in Booth #3011 at OFC/NFOEC 2007 in Anaheim, CA.
